Our History
Around the turn of the last century, Merwin Pola's grandfather, Enrico, arrived in Connecticut from Italy. He started working in some of the brick yards that dotted the shores of the Connecticut River and took advantage of the rich clay deposits there. Around 1920 he moved his family to South Windsor and took over the Pleasant Valley Brick Company.
The move to South Windsor was a perfect fit for Enrico Pola. Brickyards had been operating in the area since colonial times and the Connecticut River Valley clay made outstanding bricks. Enrico's business grew and thrived, and soon his sons joined him in the day to day operations. A decision was made to rename the company Pola Brick and it became one of the largest brick operations in New England.
Pola Brick was a true family operation and the whole family worked there. By the time young Merwin was ten years old he was helping his father, Louis, sort bricks in their brickyard. With three generations in the family business Merwin grew to know and understand all types of brick.
In the 1950s the company expanded into the retail business and sold the brickyard to Kelsey-Ferguson which today is Redland Brick and the only brick manufacturer currently operating in the area. Louis and his brothers went into the mason supply business and called their company Pola Building Supply.
It was from Pola Building Supply that Merwin Pola ended up starting his own business. In the early 1970s Merwin Mason Supply started out in a small tobacco barn with one truck.
Merwin grew the company and moved to its current South Windsor location on Chapel Road. Now with a showroom and a number of trucks for delivery to job sites Merwin Mason Supply was able to service both the homeowner as well as the contractor all while still working with his family by his side.
Today Merwin Mason Supply and the Pola family have seen five generations working with them in the brick industry and are proud to say they are still family owned and operated. They have built relationships with brick manufactures from as far away as Colorado and kept strong ties as close as Redland Brick. Through the years they have extended their business to carry a complete line of concrete pavers, Cultured Stone, retaining wall blocks, tools, chimney supplies, and so much more.
